The President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, expressed confidence that the renewal of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate will proceed smoothly. He emphasized that the Security Council supports the Good Offices of the Secretary-General and seeks to strengthen the conditions for progress in the Cyprus issue through dialogue and de-escalation. Mr. Osman highlighted the importance of stability in the buffer zone and respect for the existing status quo, describing UNFICYP's role as stabilizing. Referring to the process, he stated that Council members will carefully review the Secretary-General's reports to determine the next steps. The statement was made during the presentation of the Council's work program for January 2026, during which Somalia holds the presidency.
