US Seizes Russian Tanker Linked to Venezuela

The US has seized the Russian tanker “Marinera” (formerly “Bella 1”), which sails under the Russian flag and is allegedly linked to Venezuela. The pursuit of the vessel lasted more than two weeks in the Atlantic, with the presence of a Russian submarine and warship in the area. The US accuses the “Marinera” of violating American sanctions and of having transported Iranian oil. This is the first time in modern history that the US military has attempted to seize a ship under the Russian flag. The ship changed its name from “Bella 1” to “Marinera” and was transferred from the Guyanese to the Russian registry, prompting a reaction from Moscow, which is demanding an end to the pursuit. Russia states that the ship is in international waters and is moving in accordance with international maritime law. US authorities had previously made unsuccessful attempts to seize the vessel. The situation is escalating, with potential geopolitical implications.
