US Wants to Buy Greenland, Not Occupy It, Rubio Says

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assured that the United States seeks to purchase Greenland and that recent statements about the vast island, an autonomous region of Denmark, should not be interpreted as an announcement of military intervention. The comments came after reports that Donald Trump had asked his associates to present him with an updated plan to acquire Greenland, an idea he had also considered during his first term (2017-2021). The White House spokesperson stated that Trump is considering “a range of options,” including the use of the military, to acquire Greenland, as he views it as a national security priority and vital for deterring rivals in the Arctic. The Danish government and Greenland have requested talks with Rubio to clarify US intentions and resolve any “misunderstandings.” Denmark disputes Trump’s recurring argument about increased Chinese and Russian presence in Greenland, emphasizing that the region is secure under its control and that it has invested heavily in Arctic security. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence that the US would not violate Denmark’s national sovereignty. Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark, but foreign policy and defense remain the responsibility of Copenhagen. Denmark’s membership in NATO makes any military intervention by the US particularly problematic. The potential acquisition of Greenland by the US has raised concerns internationally, as it could alter geopolitical balances in the Arctic.
