US Withdraws from WHO, Leaving a 'Hole' of Hundreds of Millions

The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), despite warnings of serious consequences for global and domestic public health. This decision comes at a time when the US is the WHO's largest debtor, with outstanding contributions of $260 million. The withdrawal was decided in January 2025 by then-President Donald Trump, based on claims that the WHO failed to contain and timely communicate information about the pandemic, causing economic damage to the US. The US government has frozen all funding to the organization. Global health experts and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had repeatedly called on the US to reconsider its decision, emphasizing that the withdrawal is a loss for both sides. However, Bill Gates estimated that the US return to the WHO is not expected in the near future. The US withdrawal has caused a severe financial crisis at the WHO, forcing the organization to reduce its staff by a quarter and significantly limit its activities. Although information exchange between the US and the WHO continued last year, the future of cooperation remains uncertain. The disruption of cooperation could weaken critical international early warning and health crisis response systems.
