Vafeadis: Mobile Phone Use is Top Problem for Road Accidents

The Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, has identified distracted driving due to mobile phone use as the number one problem causing road accidents. The statement was made on the sidelines of the "48 Hours Cyprus" Classic Car Rally in Nicosia, following a fatal motorcycle accident. The Minister emphasized that while speed remains a factor, it has now been surpassed by distracted driving and the protection of vulnerable road users. Furthermore, Mr. Vafeadis addressed the protests of bus drivers regarding the speed camera system, stating that the Ministry is working on ways to provide faster warnings to drivers. He stressed, however, that the traffic code must be followed for the safety of all, and that better management of the road network and driver training can help solve the problem. The Minister of Transport showed understanding for the concerns of professional drivers, but emphasized the need to comply with the traffic code. Crossing the ALT line on a red light, he noted, constitutes a violation. In summary, the government is focusing on addressing distracted driving and protecting vulnerable road users, while also seeking solutions to issues arising from the speed camera system.
