Venezuela: Maduro Calls for Mobilization as US Allegedly Attempts to Secure Oil Reserves

Strong explosions rocked the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on Saturday, causing panic and power outages. The Maduro government has accused the United States of a military attack, with strikes reported at political and military sites in various regions of the country. President Maduro declared a state of emergency and called for a general mobilization, urging the people to confront the “imperialist attack”. Witnesses report sounds resembling aircraft or missiles, as well as gunfire near military installations. Explosions were also reported at the La Guaira port and Caracas airport. Iran condemned the attack, calling it an illegal violation of Venezuela's national sovereignty. The President of Colombia has called for an immediate convening of the Organization of American States and the UN to examine the legality of the attack. US media reports that the Trump administration carried out raids inside Venezuela, but the White House and Pentagon have not issued an official statement. The situation is escalating in a period of heightened tension, with the US having already imposed sanctions on Venezuela and strengthened its military presence in the region, while also targeting vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
