Venezuela-US: Exploratory Talks to Restore Diplomatic Relations

Venezuela and the United States are holding exploratory talks to restore their diplomatic relations, which were severed in 2019. American diplomats traveled to Caracas to discuss the possibility of reopening the US embassy in Venezuela. Caracas announced that it would reciprocate by sending its own delegation to Washington. This development also takes on regional dimensions, as the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, called on Venezuela to take joint action against drug traffickers operating on the border between the two countries. Petro's proposal comes after threats from the United States of further armed action in the region. Petro stated that the goal is for drug gangs to 'be defeated by our nations united'. The rapprochement between Venezuela and the US could have significant geopolitical implications for the region, especially in relation to tackling drug trafficking and political stability.
