Viral Infections: How to Protect Yourself During the Holidays

There is an increase in viral infections during the winter months due to falling temperatures, crowding in enclosed spaces, and relaxation of hygiene measures. During the holiday season, increased social contact can lead to faster spread of viruses. Most viral infections are transmitted through direct contact or airborne droplets released during breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Prevention is based on adopting a healthy lifestyle and applying simple protective measures. Good ventilation of spaces is crucial, as it reduces the concentration of viruses in the environment. Regular ventilation for at least 10 minutes and maintaining a temperature between 19-22 degrees Celsius is recommended. Avoiding smoking in enclosed spaces is also important, as it increases the risk of ear infections and respiratory infections. A proper diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants (such as vitamin C, lycopene, and vitamin E), combined with adequate rest, strengthens the body's defenses. Quality sleep contributes to the good functioning of the immune system. Avoiding handshakes and hugs with people showing symptoms of viral infection, as well as meticulous hand hygiene, are also important measures. Additionally, it is recommended to cover your mouth and nose with your elbow when coughing or sneezing, use tissues, and dispose of them immediately. Avoiding crowding and visiting hospitals only when necessary can reduce the transmission of viruses. Parents are advised to keep children home when they are sick. Regarding the flu, annual flu vaccination is essential for high-risk groups.
