Von der Leyen: “2026 should be a year of new momentum for the reunification of Cyprus”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the reunification of Cyprus remains an absolute priority for the European Union. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, she expressed hope that 2026 could bring renewed momentum towards a reunited Cyprus. Von der Leyen also stated that the EU will do everything in its power to ensure the success of the process under the leadership of the United Nations and reiterated the need for a Europe united in purpose and based on solidarity. The President of the European Commission emphasized that Cyprus, despite its division, embodies the values of Europe and can play a significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region. She referred to her recent visit to the port of Larnaca, where she saw Cyprus providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, and praised the courage of Cypriot firefighters. Von der Leyen reaffirmed her decision to appoint former Commissioner Johannes Hahn as the EU Special Envoy for Cyprus, underlining the importance that Brussels attaches to the issue. She also praised Cyprus as one of the fastest growing hubs for tech start-ups in Europe, noting that innovators in the field of artificial intelligence are developing the technologies of tomorrow in the shadow of Byzantine churches. Von der Leyen's speech highlighted the EU's commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue and supporting Cyprus as a member state.
