Von der Leyen: Reunification of Cyprus a Priority

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the reunification of Cyprus remains an absolute priority for the European Union. During her speech at the inauguration of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, she linked the division of the island to broader European principles, stating that these apply equally to Greenland. Von der Leyen expressed hope that 2026 could bring renewed momentum towards a reunited Cyprus and recalled the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU's Special Envoy for Cyprus. She emphasized that the EU will do everything possible to support the process under the leadership of the United Nations. The President of the European Commission mentioned that Cyprus, due to its geographical location and history, understands the importance of peace, stability and international law. Praising Cyprus for its innovation in technology, she noted that the country combines tradition with progress. Finally, von der Leyen referred to the humanitarian aid provided by Cyprus to Gaza and the courage of Cypriot firefighters, highlighting Cyprus's leadership role in the region.
