European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the new port of Limassol, marking the start of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Von der Leyen emphasized that Cyprus, due to its geographical location, possesses unique expertise that will be valuable in promoting EU issues in 2026. The two leaders discussed the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency, including migration, climate change, water security, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Christodoulides expressed Cyprus's readiness for full integration into the Schengen Zone and updated von der Leyen on efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The establishment of a Firefighting Hub in Cyprus was also discussed, with von der Leyen expressing hope for its inauguration during the Cypriot Presidency.
