When Mussolini Silenced the Press

On October 24, 1924, Benito Mussolini, the leader of the Italian fascist regime, ordered the suppression and closure of opposition newspapers, accelerating Italy's transition into a totalitarian state. This action was part of a broader strategy to silence dissent and consolidate the power of the fascist party. Mussolini had come to power in 1922 and subsequently dismantled democratic institutions. During World War II, he allied with Nazi Germany, seeking to create an Italian empire. His overthrow came in 1943, with his execution in 1945 marking the end of fascism in Italy.
