Where Will the New Prisons Be Built – Three Areas Under Consideration, Lowest Cost as Criterion

The Minister of Justice is focusing on three areas for the construction of the new Central Prisons, with the lowest cost as the criterion. Priority is given to areas that do not require expropriations and are located between Nicosia and Larnaca. The goal is to build a modern prison with international standards and a capacity of approximately 1000 people. The existing prisons will be closed and their conversion into a museum or something else will be considered. In addition, measures are being promoted to reduce sick leave among staff, such as re-examination of leave by a medical board and the scoring of prison officers based on their working hours.
