Yemen: Southern Separatists Plan Independence Referendum

The internationally recognized government of Yemen has launched an operation against Southern separatists, backed by the United Arab Emirates, escalating tensions between the two sides. The operation follows the takeover of large areas in Hadramout by the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The Southern separatists, led by Aidarous Al Zubaidi, plan to hold a referendum on the independence of South Yemen within the next two years. The UAE has stated it is approaching the escalation with restraint and remains committed to de-escalation. At least seven separatists have been killed in the strikes. Simultaneously, Cambodia accused the Thai military of "annexing" a village, while Thailand claims Cambodia occupied parts of its territory.
