Wild Poaching in the Dead Zone: Quads, Gunshots and a Chase into the Occupied Territories

A serious poaching incident occurred in the Dead Zone, between Mammari and Dhenia, on Thursday afternoon. Unknown individuals, using quad bikes and hunting rifles, were chasing and killing hares. The Game and Fauna Service mobilized immediately, but the operation to intercept the suspects was difficult due to the conditions in the area. One motorcycle escaped in an unknown direction, while the second moved towards the occupied territories. The area is open and flat, with cultivated fields, making it difficult to intercept the vehicles. Furthermore, law enforcement in the Dead Zone is complicated due to the unclear demarcation with the occupied territories. During the search, a location was found where the suspects had hidden the game. There, four freshly killed hares were found, which were confiscated as evidence. Investigations are continuing with the accompaniment of the United Nations, with the aim of finding additional evidence and identifying the perpetrators. Game and Fauna Service Spokesperson Petros Anagiotis expressed doubts about locating the suspects, as there is no substantial evidence leading to their identification. The Police were informed later and took over the examination of the hares to determine the cause of death. The number of people involved is estimated to be more than two.
