France Investigates Deaths of Two Infants Linked to Recalled Baby Formula

French authorities are investigating the deaths of two infants who had consumed baby formula that was proactively recalled. One of the babies died in the city of Pessac and had been fed with Guigoz powdered milk from Nestle. Nestle and Lactalis had recalled six batches of “Picot” baby formula due to the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin that causes gastrointestinal problems. No scientific link between the deaths and the milk has yet been established, but investigations are ongoing. Lactalis has recalled products in 18 countries and Nestle in dozens. Additionally, Danone blocked a batch of baby formula for the Singapore market. The companies emphasize that the measures were precautionary.
