Akamas: Lack of Comprehensive Road Network Planning Highlighted by Environmental Commissioner

The Environmental Commissioner and Welfare of Animals, Antonia Theodosiou, points out the lack of a comprehensive plan for the road network in the Akamas area. Despite the road works being suspended in December 2023 due to environmental issues, there has been no final redesign that takes into account the unique characteristics of the area and protects biodiversity. Ms. Theodosiou emphasizes the need for a study by an interdisciplinary team, which has not yet been carried out. According to the Commissioner, the interventions made so far are not in line with the physiognomy and topography of Akamas, and there is no clear picture of the final use of the roads. In addition, she points out that some constructions, such as rectangular culverts and cylindrical pipes, are not suitable for the area. Ms. Theodosiou also mentions the existence of a wide asphalt road built by the Akamas Municipality, which does not have a stormwater management system and causes problems. The management plan that had been finalized provided for a specific number of private vehicles and parking spaces, as well as limited access for buses. Ms. Theodosiou questions why these decisions are not being implemented, while emphasizing that the roads that exist today are unfinished and are not public roads, but forest roads for the management of the National Forest Park. Ms. Theodosiou stresses that the problem is fundamental and concerns the overall management of the area, not just the aesthetics of the roads. In addition, decisions are pending on the second phase of the projects. The need for comprehensive planning and cooperation between stakeholders is imperative to protect the unique ecosystem of Akamas.
