SEK General Secretary Highlights Need to Re-evaluate Minimum Wage

The General Secretary of SEK, Andreas Matsas, emphasized the need to re-evaluate the minimum wage to more effectively support vulnerable workers, given the ongoing inflation. This was highlighted during a meeting of the trade unions SEK, PEO, and DEOK, where ways to improve the minimum wage and incorporate the minimum wage from sectoral collective agreements were discussed. The trade unions intend to send a memorandum to the President of the Republic, requesting a meeting to discuss four interconnected issues: improving the minimum wage, redefining the strategy for employing workers from third countries, expanding collective agreements, and implementing the 'Ergani 2' software for better employment controls. Regarding collective agreements, the need for their expansion, as provided for in the directive on the European Minimum Wage, and the linkage of public contracts with the application of a collective agreement were emphasized – an agreement already reached with the President of the Republic but not yet implemented. Finally, the scheduled convening of the Labor Advisory Body on January 9th was mentioned, with the aim of discussing and managing issues related to socio-economic policy and labor matters.
