Inadequate Law Enforcement and Delayed Legal Proceedings for Gender-Based Violence Cases

Gender-based violence remains a serious problem in Cyprus, with low reporting rates and frequent cases of withdrawn charges. Only one in eight women who experience violence turn to the Police, due to fear, dependence, and lack of trust in institutions. The withdrawal of charges is not due to dishonesty, but to pressures from the environment, promises of remorse, fear of escalation of violence, or economic insecurity. The experience of reporting can lead to “secondary victimisation,” with repeated testimonies and challenges. The lack of specialised training for police and judicial officials, and limited support for victims, exacerbate the problem. The author emphasises the need for safe reporting mechanisms, immediate protection, financial and psychosocial support, and a profound cultural shift.
