Consumers Oppose €3 Fee on Online Purchases, Says Consumer Association President

The President of the Cypriot Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, expressed opposition to the EU's decision to impose a €3 fee per product on online purchases from third countries, such as Temu and Shein, which will take effect this summer. He believes that this decision will burden consumers, despite the initial aim of protecting European businesses. Mr. Drousiotis stated that the fee will be imposed even on products of low value, such as one euro, and that for a package with many products, the total fee could reach €15. The Consumers Association had expressed its opposition to the decision during discussions with the European Association, but it was not heeded. He estimates that the fee will be paid at the time of purchase to avoid increased administrative costs and bureaucracy in customs authorities. However, he warns that e-commerce platforms may absorb the cost of the fee and pass it on to consumers through higher prices. Mr. Drousiotis stressed that the decision was taken to the detriment of consumers and that the Association will continue to defend their interests.
