Cyprus Innovation Deputy Minister Responds to €500,000 Video Controversy

The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemos Damianou, responded to questions from AKEL MP Christos Christofides regarding the reported €500,000 mentioned in a recently circulated video. Mr. Damianou clarified that the amount refers to a private initiative to promote a pilot program for teaching Artificial Intelligence in schools, with a purely educational and social character. He emphasized that there is already coordination between the Ministries of Finance, Education, and his Deputy Ministry to implement the initiative. Following the finalization of the proposal, the prescribed legal and transparent process will be followed, namely the submission of a proposal to the Council of Ministers for evaluation and approval. Mr. Christofides had previously stated that the video featured the Director of the President's Office mentioning a €500,000 donation from an American investor. However, according to a response from the Accountant General, no such contribution has been recorded by the state. Mr. Christofides raised questions about the fate of the donation, implying that it may have been channeled elsewhere. Mr. Damianou dismissed any doubts, assuring that the process is institutionally correct, transparent, and without any rule violations.
