Police Chief's Announcements Spark Outrage

Published December 30, 2025, 19:26

Announcements by the Police Chief regarding changes to police working hours have sparked strong reactions from the unions. The Chief announced a reduction in working hours from 12 to 11, arguing that this would not affect the operational capability of the Force. The goal is to save manpower, with the release of 100 police officers to strengthen their presence on the streets. However, the unions strongly disagree with the change, expressing fears of a reduction in police pay. Estimates suggest that the reduction in working hours could lead to a decrease in salary of 1000 euros per year. SAK and PASYDY have announced that they will convene in emergency meetings to decide on countermeasures. The decision to reduce working hours is said to have also come about due to pressure from the Ministry of Finance to limit overtime. The Police Chief admitted that the issue had been discussed, but assured that there was no intention to cut salaries. In addition, the Chief announced the creation of a separate department to combat organized crime, which is expected to be operational in 2026. The creation of the new department was based on models used in Greece, Europol and the FBI.
