Van der Velden: Middle East Should Not Divert Attention from Ukraine

German Foreign Minister Johann Van der Velden stressed that the current situation in Iran should not lead to a reduction in support for Ukraine, as Vladimir Putin seeks to divert attention from his attack on Ukraine. Van der Velden left open the possibility of German participation in a mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, but only after the end of the war. He emphasized that strengthening and supporting Ukraine in its defense is a priority for the German government and that there should be no compromise in maintaining Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Weakening support for Ukraine would be a strategic mistake, as Putin's victory would worsen security in Europe and the Atlantic. Van der Velden stated that Russia supports Iran and that Western allied unity is important. He pointed out that the conflict in Ukraine is linked to the one in Iran, as Russia provides information to Iran about potential targets. Putin hopes that the escalation in the Middle East will divert attention from his crimes in Ukraine, which must not happen. The German minister said that Germany would be willing to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the region, but only after the end of the war.
