Venezuela: “Time for Freedom” Declares Opposition Leader – Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

The Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado, declared “time for freedom” after the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by the United States. Machado, who has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, is calling on Edmundo González Urrutia, the opposition candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, to “immediately” assume the presidency. Machado argues that Maduro was removed from power after refusing a negotiated departure. She points out that the 2024 elections were not recognized by the US, the EU, and Latin American countries due to allegations of fraud. The opposition accused Maduro of rigging the elections and claimed that their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, was the winner. Maduro’s arrest marks a new phase in Venezuela’s political crisis.
