France Investigates Infant Deaths, Potential Link to Recalled Baby Formula

French authorities are investigating the deaths of two infants who had consumed Guigoz brand baby formula, which was proactively recalled due to the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause gastrointestinal issues. Lactalis, the dairy giant producing the formula, has recalled products in 18 countries, while Nestle has also recalled its products. So far, no scientific link has been established between the deaths and the formula, but investigations are ongoing. The recall concerns six batches of “Picot” baby formula in France and other countries. Cereulide is linked to an ingredient sourced from a Chinese supplier. Lactalis emphasizes that it has not received any reports from health authorities regarding the incidents. The French Ministry of Health announced that further analyses are underway and the cases are being investigated by the relevant prosecutors. Nestle stated that it is monitoring the investigations and that, at this stage, there is no indication of a connection between the deaths and its products. The case is under close scrutiny by the authorities, with an announcement of the initial findings of the judicial investigation expected within 10 days. Danone also recalled a batch of baby formula intended for the Singapore market as a precautionary measure.
