French Diplomatic Source: Renewal of UNFICYP Mandate Expected Without Major Difficulties

A French diplomatic source stated that the renewal of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate is expected to proceed “without particular difficulties,” emphasizing its importance in maintaining a non-confrontational environment on the island. The source referred to a “new political situation” due to the election of a new Turkish Cypriot leader who is reportedly more open to a bi-zonal, bi-communal solution, as well as the commitment of the President of the Republic of Cyprus to a resolution. They believe the UN Secretary-General has the authority to advance any possible progress in negotiations. According to reports, most members of the Security Council agree on UNFICYP’s critical role and the intensification of dialogue, while some highlight the importance of avoiding unilateral actions. France considers the renewal of UNFICYP a significant issue and the resumption of substantive talks between the two sides essential.
