Kurdish People Face Annihilation, Cyprus Can Help: Yasin Tarbous

Yasin Tarbous, president of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Cyprus, warns of the threat of annihilation facing the Kurdish people in Syria, particularly in Kobani. He denounces the betrayal of the US and other major powers, which have left the Kurds at the mercy of jihadists and the al-Jolani regime. Mr. Tarbous explains that the crisis in Syria is not new, but has worsened after the fall of the Assad regime, with attacks on various communities. Kobani, which had resisted the Islamic State, is now under siege by forces linked to the Syrian army and jihadist groups. Mr. Tarbous accuses the international community of “legitimizing” extremism and of attempting to portray Kurdish forces as “terrorists.” He appeals to the EU and Cyprus to take concrete action to protect the Kurds, beyond verbal condemnations. He emphasizes that the situation is critical and that Cyprus, due to its presidency of the Council of the EU, has the opportunity to play a significant role in promoting peace and protecting human rights in the region.
