George Vasiliou (1931-2026) – the ‘almost doctor’ president

George Vasiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus (1988-1993), was born in Famagusta in 1931. He initially studied medicine in Switzerland, but his studies were interrupted when his parents responded to a call from the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and offered themselves as volunteer doctors to the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE). The ensuing financial hardship led him to leave Geneva and continue his studies at the Faculty of Economics of Karl Marx University in Budapest, due to political conditions and the inability to continue medical studies. In Budapest, he was forced to change direction and study economics. After completing his studies, he settled in London in 1958. His path to medicine stopped, but his experience shaped his political beliefs and led him to actively participate in the affairs of Cyprus. Vasiliou returned to Cyprus after the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus and played a significant role in the political life of the island. His experience abroad and his participation in social and political struggles defined him as one of Cyprus's most important leaders. The story of George Vasiliou is a story of journeys, sacrifices, and changes. From an ‘almost doctor’ he became a politician who dedicated his life to serving Cyprus and its citizens.
