Gustavo Petro: 'Real Threat' of US Military Action Against Colombia

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has stated that he believes the threat of US military action against Colombia is real, following recent US raids in Venezuela. Petro accused the US of treating other nations as part of an American “empire” and of pursuing wars for fossil fuels. Petro and Donald Trump held a phone conversation, after which Trump stated that he would meet the Colombian president at the White House in the “near future”. However, Petro’s tone after the conversation suggested that relations had not significantly improved. During the phone call, Petro emphasized Colombia’s view on Venezuela and the situation in Latin America in relation to the United States. He expressed the opinion that if the US had remained in the Paris Agreement, there would be a more democratic and peaceful relationship with the world. The two leaders have a long history of rivalry, frequently exchanging insults and threats on social media.
