Guatemala Declares State of Siege After Police Deaths in Gang Attacks

Guatemala is under a state of siege following a wave of coordinated attacks by gangs against police officers and uprisings in prisons. The attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nine police officers, are in retaliation for the government regaining control of three prisons where inmates had taken hostages. President Arevalo has declared a 30-day state of siege, suspending constitutional rights such as freedom of assembly and allowing arrests without a warrant. The military has been deployed to the streets to combat organized crime and restore calm. The Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs, designated as terrorist organizations, are fighting for territorial control and extorting citizens.
