Cyprus Mourns Former President George Vassiliou

People are paying their respects to former President of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, who is lying in state at the Holy Church of Hagia Sophia. The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Saturday, with honors as a serving head of state, and the day has been declared a public holiday. People of all ages are visiting the church to write messages of condolence in the book provided. George Vassiliou's driver for 26 years, Averof Moritsis, described him as a “second father,” emphasizing his kindness, methodical approach, and concern for people. Mr. Moritsis recounted a significant moment for Mr. Vassiliou, his decision to support Glavkos Clerides in the 1993 Presidential elections, as well as his efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus issue, proposing the return of the Kokkina enclaves as a gesture of goodwill.
