Scooter Ban Proposal Gains Traction in Cyprus

Published January 25, 2026, 11:17

A proposal to completely ban scooters in Cyprus is gaining momentum due to the lack of enforcement of existing legislation and the increasing risks associated with their use. The bill, reintroduced by the Chairman of the Transport Committee, Alekos Tryfonidis, proposes a ban on scooter circulation in all public spaces, including sidewalks, roads, and bike lanes, as well as prohibiting the operation of rental businesses. According to the proposal, using a scooter will be punishable by a fine of up to €1,000 or imprisonment of up to 3 months, while rental companies will face a fine of up to €5,000 or imprisonment of up to 6 months. Police data shows an increase in scooter-related complaints, reaching 2,800 in 2023, reinforcing the need for stricter regulation.
