Restored Ammochostos Gate Reopens in Nicosia

The Ammochostos Gate in Nicosia has reopened to the public after extensive restoration work lasting several years and costing approximately one million euros. The monument had been closed since 2018 due to flooding. The renovation was carried out with respect for the historical integrity of the monument, restoring previous inappropriate additions. The aim is to preserve the Gate for future generations and reconnect it with the modern cultural life of Nicosia. The restoration work included the restoration of the stone and wooden parts, as well as the upgrading of lighting, sound, and air conditioning infrastructure. During the work, significant archaeological knowledge was gained about the history of the monument and the city. The Deputy Minister of Culture emphasized that the Gate will be utilized in various ways during the Cypriot Presidency, while the Director of the Department of Antiquities stated that the restoration revealed evidence of the monument's original foundation and previous buildings in the area.
