Teenager Accused of Manslaughter Attacked in Prison

A 16-year-old accused of the manslaughter of a 17-year-old in Serres was attacked by fellow inmates at Kassaveteia prison. The incident occurred on Monday evening during a general disturbance that resulted in a fire in the cell block. According to reports, 11 juvenile inmates, aged 15-18, beat and tortured the 16-year-old, allegedly whipping him with an electric cable. The teenager was taken to hospital for treatment, along with the other inmates involved, and returned to prison after receiving first aid. The juveniles set fire to the mattresses, causing thick smoke and fainting spells in some of them. The fire department extinguished the fire, while authorities are investigating the possibility of arson and vandalism. The attack appears to be linked to protests over prison conditions. At the same time, an investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the assault, as the 16-year-old is in pre-trial detention for intentional homicide. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of juveniles in prison.
