Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint Margaret Honored Today

Today, January 25th, commemorates the memory of Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint Margaret. Celebrated names include Gregory, Margarita, Rita, and others. Saint Gregory the Theologian was born in Cappadocia in 329 AD and studied in Alexandria and Athens. He returned to his homeland and was ordained a priest, but preferred the tranquility of a hermitage. After pressure from his family, he returned to active church service and became a bishop, but was unable to serve his see due to the Arian inhabitants. He then experienced personal tragedies with the deaths of his siblings, father, and mother. Saint Gregory distinguished himself in Constantinople for defending Orthodoxy against the Arians. He converted a room into a church, Saint Anastasia, and delivered his five famous theological discourses, earning him the title of the Theologian. He eventually resigned and returned to his homeland, where he died in 390 AD.
