Turkey Reaffirms 'Sovereign Equality' Position in Cyprus Talks

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz and Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman met in the occupied territories, where Yilmaz reiterated Turkey's position on 'sovereign equality' between the two communities. Erhurman stated that participation in negotiations does not imply relinquishing political equality, while criticizing approaches related to the Cypriot Presidency in the EU. Both sides emphasized the importance of consultation and cooperation, but disagreed on the status of the island, with Turkey supporting the existence of two states and two peoples. Yilmaz rejected calls for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island, arguing that their presence ensures stability and security.
