Olgina to Return Late January – Diani Briefings at UN Security Council Ahead of UNFICYP Resolution

Maria Angela Olgina is expected to return to Cyprus at the end of January to continue her meetings with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, ahead of the UN Security Council vote on the renewal of UNFICYP. Her arrival coincides with the adoption of the new resolution for UNFICYP on January 29. Olgina will be briefed on the meetings held in Athens, Ankara and London and will discuss the prospects for a new informal multilateral conference. Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative, Kasim Diani, will hold consultations at the Security Council regarding UNFICYP activities and the Good Offices. The Security Council is expected to consider the use of the new resolution to encourage both sides to build on recent contacts and avoid tensions, especially in the buffer zone. Also, the invitation of Olgina to brief the members on the prospects for a new multilateral conference may be considered. Finally, the potential impact of the UN's fiscal adjustments on UNFICYP will be discussed.
