Seven Deaths from Flu in Cyprus – Hospitals Under Pressure, Meeting at Ministry of Health

Seven deaths of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza have been recorded in Cyprus since the beginning of the current epidemic season. Most of the deceased were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions who were hospitalized in hospitals within the surveillance network. A total of 98 people have been hospitalized due to influenza, of whom 85 were in state hospitals of the OKYPY and 13 in private hospitals. Of these cases, 39 were confirmed by molecular diagnosis and 59 by rapid antigen testing. Hospitals are under pressure due to the increase in seasonal infection cases. An emergency meeting was held at the Ministry of Health with the participation of representatives from OKYPY, OAY and private hospitals, with the aim of better coordinating efforts and managing patients. The Ministry of Health calls on citizens to observe personal protection measures, such as good hygiene, wearing a mask in closed spaces and avoiding contact with people who show symptoms, while emphasizing the importance of vaccination.
