Erdogan: Kurdish Forces in Syria Must Disarm and Dissolve

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Kurdish forces in Syria must disarm and dissolve to prevent further bloodshed, following a ceasefire agreement with Damascus. Forces supported by Turkey have taken territory from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria, as part of President Bashar al-Assad's effort to extend his control over the entire country. The United States, a traditional ally of the SDF, has shifted its stance and is calling on Kurdish fighters to integrate into the Syrian state. Turkey considers the SDF a terrorist organization linked to the PKK and seeks their disarmament and dissolution. Erdogan expressed hope that the ceasefire agreement would lead to the full integration of the SDF and a new era in Syria, warning that any provocation would be a “suicide attempt.” Discussions on the matter also took place in a phone call between Erdogan and Trump.
