Responsibility of Local Authorities to Collect Dead Turtles: "Unacceptable Behavior"

The Environmental Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, condemned as "unacceptable" the behavior of Chlorakas Community Council employees who appear to have been kicking a dead turtle in a circulated video. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but the Commissioner stressed that even if the turtle was already dead, the treatment was inappropriate. Theodosiou reminded that local authorities are responsible for collecting dead turtles and informing the Fisheries and Marine Research Department to investigate the causes of death and ensure proper burial. Employees often cite difficulties in handling the animals or lack of knowledge, resulting in hasty burials on the beach. Clear instructions and protocols from the Fisheries Department exist for the proper handling of dead turtles, which must be followed strictly. The Commissioner emphasized the need for training of local authority staff so that they are aware of the correct procedures and similar incidents can be avoided. This behavior undermines efforts to protect marine life and is incompatible with the respect we owe to protected species. In the event of finding a live turtle, immediate notification of the Fisheries Department is essential for providing care.
