The Route of Apollon Captains to Rival Camps

Several Apollon team captains have transferred to rival Cypriot teams over the past 15 years. The recent transfer of Chambos Kyriakou to AEK is the latest example of this trend. Since 2011, players such as Christis Theophilos (AEK, AEL, Aris), Giorgos Merkis (APOEL), Angelos (Enp), and Foti Papoulis (Omonia) have left Apollon to join opposing teams. Merkis, in particular, scored an own goal in his first match against Apollon after his transfer. These transfers often cause strong reactions from Apollon fans, as captains are considered important figures for the team. Their move to rival camps can be seen as betrayal by some. Recently, AEK also acquired Valentin Roberge, who also served as captain of Apollon. Thus, AEK now has two former Apollon captains in its roster, reinforcing its image as a competitor to the Limassol team.
