The Great Illusion of Artificial Intelligence

A new analysis from the European Parliament warns that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), despite its impressive progress, may be reaching its limits. Simply adding more data or processing power is not enough to address the deeper, structural weaknesses of the technology, such as the production of false answers ('hallucinations'), the inability to explain its conclusions, and the reproduction of biases. GenAI has penetrated many sectors, including education, healthcare, and business, automating processes and creating expectations for innovation. However, the technology relies on mapping statistical relationships without a real understanding of the world, which leads to inaccuracies and limitations. Progress in solving these problems appears to be slowing down. The analysis highlights that Europe needs to reconsider its strategy in the field of artificial intelligence and explore new technological paths instead of continuing to invest in the same logic. The speed of adoption of GenAI is unprecedented, with huge investments from governments and companies. The study states that the creation of a future artificial general intelligence (AGI) system is considered by many to be the next strategic geopolitical goal, but the current technology may not be ready for critical, high-risk applications. Europe is at a crucial crossroads regarding investments, strategy, and geopolitical power.
