Hamas to Elect New Leader Amidst Middle East Tensions

Published December 28, 2025, 19:13

Hamas is set to hold internal elections to choose a new leader, following the execution of Yahya Sinwar. The process will be carried out by electors inside and outside Gaza, with the exact date yet to be determined. The frontrunners are Khalil Al-Hayya, supported by officials in Gaza and linked to Iran, and Khaled Meshaal, backed by Turkey and Qatar. Both have previously faced assassination attempts by Israeli intelligence agencies. The elections are taking place ahead of the critical Trump-Netanyahu meeting on the Middle East.
