US, Kyiv and Moscow consult in Abu Dhabi on peace in Ukraine

Talks on peace in Ukraine have begun in Abu Dhabi, with the participation of representatives from the United States, Russia and Ukraine. The talks, scheduled to last two days, are taking place as part of ongoing efforts to find a political solution to the crisis. Meanwhile, the BBC, in collaboration with researchers, has recorded the deaths of 165,661 Russian soldiers in the war in Ukraine, with Russian losses being particularly high compared to other ethnic groups. The intensity of the fighting appears to remain high, as military obituaries are being published at the same rate as in January 2024. The main obstacle to negotiations remains the territorial issue. Russia insists on Ukraine ceding control of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, while Ukraine categorically rejects this request. Vladimir Putin had stated that he would be willing to withdraw troops from other occupied areas if Russian control of the Donbas was recognised. Volodymyr Zelenskyy states that the peace proposals are “almost ready” and expects Donald Trump to set a specific date for the signing of an agreement.
