The development of therapeutic mRNA vaccines to combat cancer is underway, with around 50 studies being conducted internationally. Pharmaceutical companies are leveraging the expertise gained during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop these vaccines, which activate the immune system to target cancer cells. Encouraging results are coming from clinical trials, such as the one concerning melanoma, where a combination of personalized mRNA vaccine and immunotherapy reduced the risk of recurrence or death by almost 50%.
