Policeman Brutally Assaulted Inside Detention Center in Thessaloniki

A 51-year-old police officer was brutally assaulted by a 23-year-old detainee inside the detention center of the Thessaloniki Transfer Sub-Directorate. The officer had approached the cell to de-escalate tension when he was attacked and lost consciousness. He was taken to the 424 Military Hospital in Thessaloniki, where he is hospitalized out of danger. The 23-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and violence against employees, and was referred to an investigator. In addition, a 33-year-old foreign national was arrested, who was taken to the immediate trial and sentenced to eight months in prison without suspension for violence against employees. The foreigner denied involvement in the assault, claiming that the 23-year-old had a panic attack. The incident highlights the difficulties faced by police officers in carrying out their duties in detention centers and the need to strengthen security measures.
