Israeli Tank Fires Near UNIFIL Peacekeepers in Lebanon

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced that an Israeli tank opened fire near its peacekeepers, describing such incidents as becoming “alarmingly frequent.” UNIFIL has repeatedly reported Israeli gunfire near or towards its personnel in recent months. On January 2nd, it stated that Israeli forces fired near peacekeepers twice, without causing casualties. According to UNIFIL, two Merkava tanks moved from an Israeli position into Lebanese territory. Despite requests via liaison channels to halt their activity, one of the tanks fired three shells, two of which landed approximately 150 meters from the peacekeepers. Furthermore, the peacekeepers were continuously targeted with laser beams as they retreated for safety. Approximately 10,800 peacekeepers are stationed to monitor the ceasefire line between Israel and Lebanon since March 1978. They operate in southern Lebanon in cooperation with the Lebanese army, under the terms of the ceasefire agreement in effect since November 2024 between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. Israel is obligated under the agreement to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, but continues to occupy five areas it deems strategically important, while also carrying out near-daily airstrikes, typically claiming to target Hezbollah infrastructure or members. UNIFIL reported no casualties, but had informed Israeli forces of its activities in the area beforehand. UNIFIL condemned the attacks as a “serious violation” of Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which forms the basis of the ceasefire agreement. The mission is scheduled to withdraw from Lebanon in 2027.
