Historic Snowfalls in Cyprus: Snowmen in Nicosia and Blocked Villages

Cyprus has experienced several historic snowfalls, with the most significant being that of February 1950. During this snowfall, the entire island was covered in snow, reaching approximately 30 centimeters in Nicosia and even greater heights in villages, where it reached window level. British authorities were forced to airdrop supplies to isolated communities, with snowfall even occurring in coastal areas like Ayia Napa and Larnaca. The period 1968-1969 recorded a record rainfall, while in 1981 the highest snowfall was recorded in Troodos (248 centimeters) and Mount Olympus (over 3 meters). In 1989, the highest snowfall in 24 hours was recorded (70 centimeters in Troodos). Finally, significant snowfalls also occurred in 1992 and 2015, causing problems and requiring rescue and supply operations.
