Ioannou: Housing Crisis Requires Coordinated European Response

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, emphasized the importance of a coordinated European response to the housing crisis during a meeting with journalists from Brussels visiting Cyprus. He highlighted that the lack of access to affordable housing affects social cohesion, economic resilience, and Europe's ability to attract and retain workers. The Minister stated that the Cypriot presidency will promote four pillars for affordable housing: increasing supply, mobilizing investments, supporting citizens for energy poverty, and protecting vulnerable households. He noted that Cyprus has already significantly reduced the licensing time for construction projects, from 18 months to 40-80 working days. Furthermore, the government provides incentives to developers, such as an increased building factor, with the obligation to allocate part of the new apartments as affordable housing. The Minister warned that simple financial support for citizens is not enough, as it will lead to price increases if the housing supply is not increased. Recognizing the pressure that short-term rentals place on the market, Mr. Ioannou mentioned that Cyprus is considering ways to address the phenomenon, as are other European cities (Madrid, Lisbon, Athens), where the preference of owners for short-term rentals limits the supply of housing for permanent residence.
