The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, emphasized that Cyprus remains a competitive tourist destination, speaking at the opening ceremony of the World Chess Championship, hosted in Cyprus for the first time. The championship, taking place at Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Paphos from March 28th to April 16th, brings together the 16 top chess players in the world and is expected to attract international attention. Mr. Koumis highlighted the importance of hosting high-level events for Cyprus and showcasing it as a safe and attractive destination. He also mentioned the Ministry's investment in special forms of tourism, aiming to further enhance Cyprus's competitiveness. The President of the Cyprus Chess Federation, Kriton Tornaritis, described the event as a global event that promotes Cyprus abroad. He also mentioned an incident with a chess player from India who expressed concerns about safety in Cyprus, which Mr. Tornaritis dismissed as a false statement. The Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, expressed his satisfaction with hosting the event in the area, emphasizing the high quality of services offered by the island. Simon Trelof, one of the organizers, referred to the championship's reputation and the quality of the participants, while praising Cyprus as an excellent destination.
